I have a friend, a Christian pastor, here in Gwangju, Korea. We would commute together to work. One thing that my patience – all the lights are 4-way lights. You have to wait for three other directions to go before you get the green light. Seeing this about to happen, I made like a dog: a right, a left, across the street, a left, and a right, by-passing the light. Then my friend told me, “Man can do nothing, only God.”
I recently wrote that physicists deny that we have free will. Our minds are complex, like multi-core processors, ultra-fast, and happen at the atomic scale. On this level, everything is already determined and out of our control. Eleven million pieces of information are coming into your mind, and only 40 of them are being processed consciously.
Christiana Figueres talks about mindset here. Faced with today’s facts, we can be indifferent, do nothing, and hope the problem goes away. We can despair and plunge into paralysis. Or, we can become stubborn optimists, with fierce conviction that no matter how difficult, we must and we can rise to the challenge… Our optimism can not be a sunny-day attitude. It has to be gritty, determined, relentless.
This last sentence reminds me of the Daoist sage (DDJ, chapter 15).
If I am to join Christiana’s family,
if my predetermined story, the path already laid out for me, is to be as the sage:
- solemn and reserved like a visiting guest
- supple and pliant like ice about to melt
- broad like the boundless sea
- vigorous like the untiring blowing wind
then I am content.
