The storms left this area with a gorgeous sunset and the land intact.
We have been inside a tipi for a few days. It is safe to say we know each other well.
We have some bittersweet news. Aka and Asii will be working as Northern Plains Rangers. Their orientation takes place in Yellowstone, so that is where we will go.
In their honor, here are their Greenlandic life stories:
Aka grew up in the international city of Ilulissat. She has both a global and Kalaallit perspective. She was engaged to marry a Kalaallit hunter, the son of the mayor of Ilulissat. Their rosy engagement ended tragically in an accident on the winter ice.
For the rest of her life, Aka has been traveling the world, gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience of the natural world.
She believs strongly in the rights of animals, that animals are emotional, intelligent beings.
So it would seem that Asii, the caribou hunter, is an odd traveling companion for Aka. But they seem to have reconciled their differences. Asii has great courage to explore the wild lands. It has been our privilege to travel with them.
We are in no hurry to depart these short grasslands, as this feels like a destination.
