Jonathan Haidt warns against having the feeling of disgust toward those on the other side of issues, including the economy. I want to highlight his kind of impartial talk about capital.
- He starts the talk by distinguishing between tame problems vs. wicked problems. Those in power have found a way to make any problem a wicked problem with no easy fix.
- I agree about Haidt’s focus on human stories. Stories are strongly linked with the subconscious. The subconscious drives our actions, and is not logical. In other words, stories are what make us who we are. What we believe drives what we perceive.
- There is some truth to all his stories, including his second story. Capitalism as an important tool in human history – see his graph about GDP, and Declining Global Poverty. However, I believe this success story is used as a rationalization for capitalist actions.
- He proposes a third story of dynamism with decency. There seem to be good ideas, but.. (that is as far as I will go into political topics)
