Death Metal Bats

This week, the COP 15 biodiversity summit will be held in Montreal.

And, the Guardian’s article on bats felt like a good way to kick things off.

The article is about a noise that bats make that was discovered when scientists were researching about the bats echolocation.

While they emit ultrasonic chirps to echolocate flying insects in the dark, they also engage thick structures in the larynx called ventricular folds to communicate with each other at low frequencies.

Humans also do this. As was noted, death metal singers and Tuvan throat singers use this deep vibrating noise in song.

These types of songs are prehistoric – the Tuvan singing, not the death metal.
