Modern Qarmaq

Inuit Igloo, by Frank E. Kleinschmidt

Back in Greenland we returned our Hōkūleʻa vessel, with reluctance.
Traveling in this vast expanse used to be about sled dogs, snowmobiles and air travel.
Traveling now is about the hyperloop.
Our journey begins on this wild coast in a touristy village. We booked a qarmaq, a type of hybrid architecture – a tent/ igloo/ sod house.
This modern one has glass block, timber, and a prefab roof with sod on top.
We creep inside a low-lying entrance. It opens into a passageway that functions as an underground greenhouse.
A raised living area is next, framed by timber construction. The timbers hold up a sod covered roof. And everything except the roof is enclosed by glass blocks.
It looks similar to an igloo from the outside. So we are able to have the feeling of staying in an igloo on a hunting trip.
The sod roof dims the sun, and we have a sound sleep.
