We have been on a mountain bike tour of the volcanoes around here.
We have our surfing equipment stored in lockers at Manizales Station.
On the first day, we climbed Nevado del Ruiz, a volcanic mountain. The climbing is at a slower pace and very challenging. Hyung and Z had derailer problems in the glacier. There was also a portion of the climb where we walked the bikes.
But there were some bright spots. We got a taste of empanadas and arepas from vendors along the way. We’ve made some friends, Tonya and Christine, who helped with the derailers.
After dealing with bike problems, we soaked our worn-out bodies in the hot springs that evening.
The next day we rode by another volcano, Nevado del Tolima: too steep, even for mountain dragonfly bicycles. But there were refreshingly cool mountain streams. And we enjoyed laughing at our ineptitude. You know you are in high altitudes when the horizon is always hugging around you.
We gave our bodies a rest and camped on the mountain for a day before riding down.
Then, we made our way down to the Cocoro Valley. The wax palm trees were beautiful and strange. They reminded us of when we started our tour underneath cherry blossoms.
Tonya and Christine have invited us to Quito, where they are from. They are cool. And they have shown to be expert mountain bikers, too.
