Mufasa’s Lesson 1

I have been too busy working on something (hopefully I can post about it later). But I have been thinking about this ‘circle of life’ scene in the Lion King.

Mufasa is telling his son, Simba, about being king. “There’s more to being king than getting your way all the time. Simba, everything you see exists together in a delicate balance. As king, we need to understand that balance. And, respect all the creatures – from the crawling ant to the leaping antelope.

This leads Simba to ask, “But don’t we eat the antelope?”

Mufasa explains, “When we die our bodies become the grass. And, the antelope eat the grass. So, we are all connected in the great circle of life.”

This is the story that we have shared about nature and the delicate balance of life on earth. This story was told (as I posted before) from a physics framework, by Brian Cox and Joe Hanson.

Hanson: “Energy is the first big thing that is required for living things to do what they do.”

Cox on energy: “It’s a thing that is conserved.”

Cox on entropy: “On the road from order to disorder.

Hanson on entropy: “The universe started off in a highly ordered way at the Big Band, and it is on its way to an increasingly disordered and boring state.”

Cox on life: “We are almost like an inevitable consequence of the march from order to disorder.”

(Cox explains that you can have a localized increase in order as long as there is a price of increased order in the system – like an air conditioner.)

Hanson on the sun: “You probably know that all life on Earth today gets its energy from the sun, whether directly from photosynthesis, or eating things that do photosynthesis, or eating the things that eat the things that do photosynthesis.

(Hanson explains that we are still using the sun, which emerged from the Big Bang)

Cox on the balance: “Now the Earth radiates as much energy out into space as it receives from the sun.

Hanson on entrapy: “The sun is not just a source of energy, it’s a source of order.”

(Cox explains that we are hastening the demise of the universe. We are radiating disorder into the universe.)

But the sun sustains us, and maintains the order in our world.
