The Guardian on Wildlife 3

This post about a bar tailed godwit and an amazing migratory feat. A five month old bird, likely part of a flock of other young birds, set the world record with a 13,560km continuous flight from Alaska to southern Australia.

The young birds spend a few extra six weeks in Alaska fattening up for the flight to Australia. Their bodies reduce the size of their digestive organs to allow for added fat.
These birds likely understand weather systems to time their take-off with optimum wind conditions.
There are about 272,000 bar-tailed godwits in existence. The main threat to this species is (again) habitat loss.
