Adapted from The Tao Te Ching, chapter 10, by Lao Tzu, translated by Feng Jia-fu and Jane English:
Carrying board and soul and embracing the wave,
Can you avoid separation?
Surfing fully and becoming supple,
Can you be like a newborn babe?
Washing and cleansing the primal vision,
Can you be without agendas?
Loving all bros and ruling the beach,
Can you be righteous?
Can you be a beach bum?
Opening and closing the gates of heaven,
Bearing the burden of society?
aware and open to all things,
Are you able to do nothing?
Giving birth to surfer culture and nourishing it,
Having no possessions,
Working on your form yet not taking credit,
Leading without force
That is the Primal Virtue
