With a hint of civilization, we are on a coffee tour. This area outside of Manizales has long been known for its great coffee. The tour guides are showing how to sustain a plantation in the wild lands.
After the temperatures in the Andes warmed, coffee plants grow better in the shade. A common benefit of having only 2 billion people on Earth is that there can be more time for the beans to grow. This also makes for a more aromatic bean.
The shade is from galupa vines, and in these vines is a habitat for yellow warblers. Warblers are critical to organic coffee production because they are in charge of pest management – coffee borer beetles.
We enjoyed a the local brew.
We will keep riding these dragonfly mountain bikes. In the morning, we ride to Los Nevados.
